The regulator first stage is an integral part of any scuba diving gear. This device basically has the function of minimizing a scuba tank’s air pressure (usually around 3,000 psi) to a medium pressure of 125 to 150 psi above the ambient pressure. This what some may call intermediate air pressure is then fed into the regulator second stage to be converted into the ideal gas that scuba divers consume.

The first stage regulator comprises of two air chambers, which are separated by either one or a series of valves whose job is to permit the gas from the scuba tank to flow in a more controlled manner. When the regulator first stage is not pressurized, these valves are normally open. However, once fitted to the cylinder air flowing from the tank passes into the first chamber and they close when it reaches the second chamber and is converted into a medium pressure.

This device is attached to the cylinder by a knob or screw mechanism that is commonly known as the yoke fitting. Alternatively, some of these products make use of a din fitting that is essentially a direct screwing mechanism.
