It is only two primary components that make up the wing system. As with most things, there are several add on options give it flexibility and modularity. The wing is the heart of the system. This consists of an inner airtight bladder that is horse-shoe or ellipse shaped and is more commonly known as a doughnut. The strong outer fabric shell is tightly embedded between the back plate and the tank or tanks, which are attached to a cam band that loops through the adapter or backplate and wing.

The most basic form of harness is 2 inch webbing forming a loop. This is very comfortable even though it appears not to be, and the crotch strap is the final part. These do offer support below the surface and act as useful attachment points for accessories, although they are not always required for a single tank. There may be different equipment attachment points, such as the comfort padding, buckle adjustments and sliding webbing. Using the simple streamline webbing loop is often the simplest and best choice. If you are a regular wetsuit diver you may want to consider side pockets and weight pouches.

Keeping the back plate as simple as possible is best. Compared to the bcd plastic back plate, a single piece of milspec stainless/marine grade or aluminum is able to hold the tank or tanks in place and last forever! Stainless steel plates are best suited to dry suit divers and weigh about 2kilograms. Divers that have a habit of using minimal exposure protection or do a lot of traveling prefer super light aluminum plates. Padding is just an aesthetic option and somewhat pointless as you will not feel it when hanging from a harness in warm water. The extra expense is unnecessary.

If you choose wings that are too big you will find it difficult to dump gas. Double tanks require 40lb/50lb and single tanks require 30lb. If you are using a large lift capacity wing with a single diving tank you have the options of bungee loops and redundant internal bladders, which help control the wing volume. These options are not always considered suitable for every situation and should therefor always be carefully evaluated according to your future and current diving requirements.

Because of the modular nature of the wing system, you are able to choose the correct size wing for you. All bcds have to be ordered in stock sizes offered. A great fit bcd for tropical diving might not necessarily be a good fit over a drysuit, especially when gaining or losing a few pounds! This is not a problem with backplates as they are adjustable. scuba bcds do need to be replaced periodically as they wear out. The cost for replacing 2 inch webbing is minimal. Money spent on a tough bcd wing system is a far better long term investment than a traditional bcds, especially if you are an instructor.

In fact, given the small size they pack down to, travel wings are becoming a lot more popular and many divers have begun using them. In fact, if you're after the techie look, then a wing style bcd will certainly fit the bill. Just make sure you don't get them only for the cool factor, since safety always comes first and performance trumps looks, if you are an experienced divers, by diving with a bcd wings system you may just be doing the best thing you have ever done!
